Stocks represent ownership in a company. When the company grows, your ownership can become more valuable. Some stocks may also pay dividends, but stock prices move daily and require patience. Bonds are like lending money to a company or government. They generally offer more stability and steady income, but usually with lower long-term growth compared to stocks. Padma explained the important balance between risk and return — higher potential returns often come with higher risk, but time can help manage that risk. One of the biggest lessons: market drops are normal. Staying invested through downturns has historically rewarded patient investors. She emphasized the power of diversification — not putting all your eggs in one basket. A strong portfolio may include U.S. stocks, international stocks, bonds, REITs, commodities, and infrastructure. Index funds and ETFs were explained as simple, effective ways to own hundreds of companies in one investment — without trying to pick individual winning stocks. Padma also introduced dollar-cost averaging, where you invest a fixed amount regularly, making investing more automatic, boring, and effective.
